Hackberry trees drop seeds in October through winter. These seeds germinate easily, sending up involuntary hackberry shoots. As well, leaf drop can occur during drought. Considered invasive, some property owners opt to get rid of them entirely. Remove involuntary hackberry trees with pruning shears, making a cut straight across the trunk in one clean swipe, about an inch above the ground. If the hackberry is larger than one-half-inch in diameter, use a pruning saw.
