By 1975 a good portion of the neighborhood received a district designation on the National Register of Historic Places, calling attention to the incredible fact that nearly 500 houses from the late nineteenth century were still standing in the shadow of downtown Denver. The decline of the neighborhood had been stemmed (no pun intended) and fresh owners dove into fixing up their homes and yards. Nearly always short on cash and rich with elbow grease, these buyers worked hard to trim and fix the existing landscaping vs. replacing it. Pruning was essential. No official was really monitoring the pruning, so some shrubs and trees were sacrificed to bad work.
