If you’re interested in planting an oak to rival Englewood’s legendary Bur Oaks, consider the Gambel oak, native to Colorado. It’s adaptable to most soil conditions in our state. English oaks, with their broad shape and rounded top, are tolerant of heavy clay soils. Northern red oak is a fast-growing oak featuring spectacular fall foliage of dark red, then ruddy brown and orange. Soil with a pH of less than 7.5 is recommended. The Swamp white oak is a rugged, hardy tree with a broad oval crown, and they tolerate clay soils. The Pin oak does not thrive in Colorado’s climate.
