When Lone Tree was incorporated in 1995, it was 1.5 square miles large, er small. Cows grazed nearby. Today the city has expanded to nearly 10 square miles in Douglas County with a population of 15,705. It’s home to Colorado’s largest mall, Park Meadows, with more than 185 internationally known stores and restaurants.

Nine years earlier, the 18-hole Lone Tree Golf Course & Hotel opened on the west side of I-25. The Arnold Palmer/Ed Seay-designed course features 7,054 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. Located just 30 minutes from downtown Denver, the rye grass course features stunning views of the Front Range with water in play on half the holes and deep bunkers guarding the greens and fairways. The 15th tee box is said to have the most memorable view.

Named by Niche.com as one of the best places to live in Colorado for the urban/suburban mix and highly rated public schools, Lone Tree has been recognized since 2002 as a Tree City USA community. Tree City USA encourages urban areas to manage and expand public trees. As part of that tradition, Lone Tree offers an Arbor Day program that makes it affordable and easy for residents to buy trees online. Types of trees discounted for purchase include Austrian pine, Colorado spruce, spring snow crab, autumn blaze maple, Chanticleer pear, and Japanese lilac, trees that do well in the area’s climate.

Julius Zasko is the Lone Tree city forester. He says the call to plant more trees is not just for appearances. Without continual planting the harsh climate of the region would likely be bare, he says referring to a 1950’s photo of the city that shows no trees at all. The Lone Tree website encourages residents to water trees during winter.

Property owners are required to replace trees or shrubs when 40% or more of the plant is dead or is succumbing to disease or when the top is dead and the next primary branch is unlikely to take over as the new top.

New and replacement evergreen trees on commercial properties may range between 6 and 10 feet in height. Leaf-bearing trees may range between 2 and 3-inch caliper. The minimum plant sizes are stated in the Municipal Code.
