Are there dead things that need replacing? How about the layout? Do you want to change, move, or add plantings? How’s your irrigation system? Do you want to make it more efficient, or will it need to be moved? Make lists and sketches so you’ll know what to tackle and when. And take a look at costs so you can plan a budget for any major projects.
Get Fresh Ideas
Short on ideas or inspiration? Winter is prime time for home and garden shows. Go have a look and talk to experts about what you want to do. Visit with the garden clubs there. These people have probably done all the things you’re considering and can offer first-hand advice on what to do and what to avoid. Most shows have free classes and seminars that can help guide and teach you in your landscaping plans. Pick up a book or two or spend some time online to learn new things and explore your options.
Get Ready to Roll
Even if all you plan is to start mowing grass and replanting gardens, having your tools ready for action will put you ahead of the game. Clean and sharpen your shovels, hoes, and mower blades. You’ll need a metal file, steel wool, rags, and mineral spirits to do the job right. Clean the blades and remove any rust before sharpening them and make a habit of keeping them clean and rust-free year-round to extend their lives and efficiency. Wipe the tool and any wooden handles down with mineral oil to protect and seal them. If your lawnmower or other mechanical equipment need servicing, winter is the time to do it. Shops will be jammed in the spring.
Use your winter downtime wisely and come springtime, you’ll be ready with great ideas and the tools you need to put them into action.
