Are you envious of the beautiful fall colors of New England? Or do you just want a shade tree that will turn heads with a blaze of color when summer turns to fall? Then the Autumn Blaze Maple is the tree for you.
An Award-Winning Hybrid Tailored for Color
The Autumn Blaze Maple is a cross between red and silver maples that’s a stronger, more color-consistent tree that’s taken the US by storm since its introduction in the early 1980s. It’s a fast-growing, hardy tree ideally suited to Colorado’s climate extremes.
Characteristics
Autumn Blaze Maples are one of the fastest-growing maples, adding nearly three feet in height each summer. In Colorado’s climate it tops out around 45 feet with a spread of 20-25 feet.
Its characteristic five-lobed leaves start out as green with a slight reddish undertone and turn vibrant red in the fall. They also last longer into the fall than most other trees. Its upward limb growth pattern lets it stand up well to heavy snow and ice loads. That pattern is also narrower than most other shade trees making it an excellent choice for small yards and narrow spaces.
Planting and Maintenance
Hardy to -30°F, the Autumn Blaze Maple is drought, disease, and pest resistant needing only occasional summer waterings and minimal care. One of the most popular trees along Colorado’s Front Range, Autumn Blaze Maples can be planted at elevations up to 7,000 feet.
Autumn Blaze Maples can be planted in spring and summer, but fall is the best time to let a strong root system develop over the winter and early spring. You’ll be rewarded the next fall with a spectacular autumn blaze of color.
