The snow, well, is anticipated. We are deep into December and some of the most popular holiday attractions around the metro area are Christmas Lights.

On the west side of town Camp Christmas has moved to Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park. You might remember Lonnie Hanzon’s holiday light display from Stanley Marketplace in 2019. Then, due to the pandemic, the display went online for 2020. The six acre, five building site caught Hanzon’s attention considering many people don’t want to be couped up too near others these days.

Downtown Denver’s Union Station Grand Illumination is the bright spot in the heart of the city. At 17th and Wynkoop, a 40-foot-tall, 7000-light outdoor tree is the beacon for the historic and futuristic Union Station. Appearances from Santa and classic holiday tunes play throughout the season.

Since 1988, Denver Botanic Gardens at 1007 York St has set the standard of outdoor walkabout holiday lighting tours. This year the walking tour is amped up with the O’Fallon Perennial Walk showcasing a 200-foot-long, 17-foot-tall tunnel of animated lights.

It’s enough to make you consider lighting up your own abode…perhaps for your grown-up self that always wanted a Chevy Chase-worthy lit home for the holidays.

But you’re too late for the 2021 season. There’s a routine 2 – 3-month wait at Donovan Arborists. So set your calendar now to contact Denver’s premier arborist in September of 2022 to ensure you’re on the lit list.

The best thing about having Donovan Arborists install your holiday lights is that they are experts in tree health and maintenance. They will never install lights on trees that will damage the trees…a mistake many homeowners do when they go with DIY lighting.

  • Invest in LED lights that are energy efficient and don’t emit light in the red or infared spectrum which can impact tree dormancy.
  • Connect multiple light strands to ensure they still work. Some outdoor lights have a limit on the number of strands that can be connected and still work.
  • Outdoor electrical cords must have GFCI (ground-fault circuit-interrupter) protection.
  • Wrap the tree from the trunk upwards. Once you’ve reached the end of the limb, reverse direction and wind the light string back down the limb again.
  • Use natural twine or planting tape to secure the light string. Plastic zip ties work too.

If you don’t want to spend Christmas Eve with your leg elevated or New Year’s Day wobbling around on crutches, we recommend you call the pros, Donovan Arborist, for your holiday tree lighting installation. We bring the proper ladders and cherry pickers to the job so as not to risk a fall. The ground can be uncertain due to moisture and ice, and that affects the ladder’s sturdiness. It’s hard to manage 100-ft lengths of pretty much anything including string lights.
