Planting the Seeds of Your Future: A Guide to Successful Tree Planting

Trees are the lungs of our planet, beautifying our neighborhoods, providing shade, and offering a haven for wildlife. Planting a tree is an investment in your property and the environment, but it’s important to do it right! Here at Donovan Arborists, we’re passionate about trees, and we want to help you plant yours for long-lasting success.

Choosing the Right Tree

The key to a thriving tree is selecting the perfect species for your location. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Climate and Sunlight: Research trees that flourish in your specific climate zone and match the amount of sunlight available in the planting area.
  • Mature Size: Consider the mature size of the tree and ensure it has ample space to grow without interfering with power lines, structures, or other trees.
  • Soil Conditions: Different trees thrive in different soil types. Knowing your soil composition will help you choose a tree that will be happy in its new home.

Colorado’s climate is known for its dry summers and cold winters. Here are some of the best trees to plant in Colorado, taking into account these conditions:

  • Blue Spruce (Picea pungens)

This is the state tree of Colorado, and for good reason. It’s a beautiful evergreen conifer that can withstand the cold and wind. It grows relatively fast, reaching up to 50 feet tall at maturity.

  • Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa)

This fast-growing evergreen is a good option for windy areas. It’s tolerant of drought and poor soil conditions. It can grow up to 60 feet tall.

  • Rocky Mountain Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum)

This juniper is a slow-growing evergreen shrub or small tree that is native to Colorado. It’s very drought-tolerant and can grow in a variety of soil conditions. It can reach up to 30 feet tall.

  • Gambel Oak (Quercus gambelii)

This is the only native oak tree that grows in Colorado. It’s a deciduous tree that loses its leaves in the fall. It’s tolerant of drought and can grow up to 50 feet tall.

Planting for Success

Once you’ve chosen your perfect tree, it’s time to prepare for planting. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  • Dig a Proper Hole: The hole should be 2-3 times the diameter of the root ball and slightly deeper than the root ball itself.
  • Loosen the Root Ball: Gently loosen the root ball to encourage healthy root growth.
  • Position the Tree Carefully: Center the tree in the hole and ensure the root flare (the area where the trunk widens) is slightly above the soil level.
  • Backfill and Water Deeply: Fill the hole with the removed soil, tamping it down gently to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly to settle the soil and hydrate the roots.
Giving Your Tree a Healthy Start

The first few years after planting are crucial for a tree’s establishment. Here are some aftercare tips:

  • Watering Regularly: Especially during the first year, water your tree deeply and consistently, particularly during dry spells.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the tree (but not touching the trunk) to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
  • Pruning for Structure: Light pruning in the early years can help your tree develop a strong, healthy structure. For proper pruning techniques, consult a certified arborist, like Donovan Arborists. We provide professional Tree Trimming services!
When to Call a Professional

While tree planting can be a rewarding DIY project, there are situations where it’s best to call in a professional arborist. This includes:

  • Large or mature trees
  • Difficult planting conditions (rocky soil, slopes, etc.)
  • Species requiring specific planting techniques
