In a DIY era, Jacks of All and Masters of None will take photos on a cell phone and call them good enough for their website. The same Jacks will rent a floor sander and attempt to make their floors look like new. Not so much. They’ll dedicate a weekend to replacing the concrete front walk. It crumbles way too soon. And in the pre April 15 season, they’ll take a whack at their own tax preparation. Audit alarms are going off.
The weather hit 54° on January 19 in Denver drawing folks out of their homes where they’ve been tucked in for Covid for too long. While they might have only ventured as far as the backyard, guaranteed their thoughts turned to warm weather ahead. Imagine taking a seat in a lawn chair with a cool drink and an iPad and cell phone. Working from home gets evermore delightful.
The City of Denver counted 160 calls to 3-1-1 for downed trees and tree limbs after the mid-April 2021 snowfall that brought between 5” in Lowry to 8” in Westminster. Older, large trees toppled into yards and streets; some landed on vehicles.
Fall is a great time to plant trees. Roots grow best in cooler soil and shorter days let trees focus more energy on building a strong root network instead of growing leaves and branches.
Plus, bargains abound as nurseries begin clearing out their stock before winter hits.
One of the many joys of fall in Colorado is harvesting pine nuts. Long a staple in native diets, pine nuts have become a popular ingredient in today’s southwestern and Mediterranean cuisine as well as nutritious, high-energy snacks.
Fall is the best time to plant most deciduous (leafy) trees. It gives them a head start on spring growth while they concentrate on building a healthy root system over the winter.
As long as the soil is workable, trees can be planted, and in most lower-altitude Colorado locations that means planting time extends well into late fall and even early winter before subsoil freezing becomes an issue.
As springtime approaches, homeowners’ thoughts turn to Colorado’s great outdoors and ways to enjoy it. Often that’s right in their own back yards, so it’s important to build a space to enjoy for years to come. And one of the things that can have a big impact on that enjoyment is the choice of trees.
Earth Day was April 22 and a lot of people no doubt made resolutions, just like they did for the New Year. And just like New Year’s resolutions, many will be forgotten within a few weeks.

So you want to sell your house? Curb appeal is one of three drivers in a home purchase; the others being price point and neighborhood. Changing your neighborhood is out of your control. You do have control over the price point you set for your property, but you’re wise enough to know that an offer will likely come in lower than the asking price, so why rush it. Curb appeal? Well get on it!
Put a fresh coat of paint on the front door, lay down a new doormat, fix the hinge on the screen door so that it doesn’t drag when the door is opened, put a fresh seat cushion on that front porch swing and cluster planters filled with bright geraniums and vines as thick as draperies on the walkway by the first step to the porch. Add a few lanterns with LED candles (vs. wax candles that will melt) and your house looks like it is right out of Martha Stewart Living.
That is until you take a hard look at the yard.
