Adding a tree or two to your landscape is both an investment and a commitment. Taking some time to do your homework will pay off in long-term rewards, both aesthetic and financial.
If you’ve ever tried to remove a tree or clear a stump, you know that these plants can have extensive root systems that cling tenaciously to the soil around them. So why do we see so many stories of trees uprooted by storms? Here are some reasons.
Your landscape may be hibernating for the winter, but you’re not, so use your yardwork hiatus to get things ready to hit the ground running come spring.
Most fruit trees are hardy and able to withstand the extremes of Colorado’s Front Range climate. They have attractive foliage, interesting shapes, and beautiful flowers in early spring.
Springtime means you can bury those memories of a rough winter and plant that garden, maybe add some bushes – even plant a tree or two.
Just remember that young trees need plenty of care in their first three years and you have an obligation to get them off to a good start.

In this three part series, I will explain the steps that need to be taken to successfully plant a tree in the Denver area. Some of the information will be from science and a lot of the information will be from 20-plus years of experience. That’s what I do. I assess trees for health, safety and beauty.
There is no perfect tree. So, no matter what tree you choose to plant in your landscape, there will be some sort of maintenance involved. Most trees will occasionally need pruning to improve its aesthetics and health.
In the previous two posts, we discussed evaluating a new tree site for space, soil type and sun exposure – all important factors to consider when planting the “Right Tree in the Right Place.” Once these factors are determined, we can narrow the search to finding the suitable trees for your space.
